Born in Peja, Kosova in 1970, the artist Sislej Xhafa, is based in New York. He is known for his artistic investigation into the social, economical and political realities associated with the various complexities of modern society. Xhafa's works are minimal, as well as ironic and subversive. He operates in various media, from sculpture and drawing to performance and photography. His works aim to challenge viewers to recognize the symptoms and cracks of contemporary global society.
Xhafa has exhibited widely including the PS1 and the Moma, New York (2001), the GAMeC of Bergamo, Italy (2002), the I Bienal de Arte Contempor·neo de Sevilla, Spain (2004), the Haifa Museum of Art, Haifa (2004), the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2003), and the Venice Biennale (1997,1999 & 2005), the Museum of Contemporary Art KIASMA, Helsinki (2005) and others.
He has been merited with awards such as the Minimum Prize, Fondazione Pistoletto, Biella (2001), the Prize Artista Emergente Italiano/Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Premio Querini-Furla per l’Arte, Venezia (2000) and the First Prize at “Onufri 99” National Gallery, Tirana (1999).
