OLAFUR ELIASSON & TOBIAS REHBERGER
FRATERNAL TWINS
Zona Verde del Fosso della Tombola, Siena
Olafur Eliasson was born in 1967 in Copenhagen, Denmark of Icelandic
parentage. The basic elements of the weather à water, light, temperature,
pressure à are the materials that Olafur Eliasson has used throughout
his career. By introducing natural phenomena, such as water, mist or
light into an non-specifically cultivated setting, be it a city street
or an art gallery, the artist encourages the viewer to reflect upon
their understanding and perception of the physical world that surrounds
them. This moment of perception, when the viewer pauses to consider
what they are experiencing, has been described by Eliasson as “Seeing
yourself sensing". Tobias Rehberger was born in 1966 in Esslingen, Neckar.
Rehberger is interested in artistic processes that uncover the signs
of wear on pieces of art and the added aesthetic value of functional
objects. By many interventions, he has added to the profile of a young
generation of art that refuses to be territorialised by living a nomadic
life between design, fashion, commercials, public relations and advertising
strategies. Tobias Rehberger and Olafur Eliasson have decided create
a project together instead of making two individual contributions to
Arte all’Arte 10. Their project consists of two separate architectural
structures based on a bunker owned by the two artists in Berlin. Part
1will be installed in Sienna, part 2 in Staggia.
The basic idea is to reproduce the bunker in two halves. Each half will
reinterpret the structure of the bunker differently. The Sienese (the
front end of the original bunker) will have an additional, reestanding
architectural shape added to its entrance. This angular above-ground
structure forms a cave-like entrance to the underground building. The
overall atmosphere inside the Siena bunker is dark because it leads
from the warm openness of the landscape to the claustrophobic coolness
underground. The Staggia bunker is based on the rear part of the original
Berlin bunker. All of its walls will be built with glass bricks designed
specifically for this project. Made of different colours, they will
create various patterns. The rear wall is a large window that opens
onto the scenery surrounding it. With all the light coming in through
this window and all the primary material being transparent, the overall
atmosphere will be rather bright. While the Senese bunker leads from
the bright Tuscan sunlight outside into a dark interior, the Staggia
bunker leads from the interior to the bright outside light.
